Thousands of nature lovers head out into the countryside to hear the rut and enjoy this natural spectacle, but few know what it means for the animal. Behind every roar lie weeks of effort with hardly any food, which leave stags exhausted just before winter.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article we explain what the rut is, when it starts, what happens inside the animals and what you can do, as an estate manager, gamekeeper or hunter, so that the deer on your estate or hunting ground reach this key moment in good condition.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the red deer rut?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The rut is the breeding season of the red deer (<em>Cervus elaphus<\/em>), and in Spanish it takes its name from the roars that accompany it. During these weeks, stags let out powerful roars to attract hinds, mark their territory and tell their rivals who is in charge. It is a ritual of natural selection that is repeated every year.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A roar is not just noise. It is an honest signal: the deeper, louder and more frequent it is, the more strength and better condition the stag conveys. That is why hinds listen carefully, and rivals use it to size each other up before coming to blows, or rather, to antlers.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When two stags cannot settle the matter, the fighting begins over the favour of the hinds: displays of strength, with clashing antlers and shoving, that decide who keeps the harem, the group of hinds the dominant stag tries to gather and defend until mating. It all happens under the watchful eye of the hinds, who in the end also make their choice.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When does the rut start and how long does it last?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Spain it usually begins in mid-September and peaks at the end of that month and in early October. By mid-October activity declines, although this varies with the area, the altitude and the weather. In 2026, as every year, the first rains and falling temperatures set the pace and step up activity.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real clock behind this natural phenomenon is daylight. As the days shorten, the deer produces more melatonin, and this hormone triggers a rise in testosterone. Within a few weeks the animal changes: its neck thickens, it grows a darker mane, it becomes territorial and loses almost all interest in eating. The antlers, which have grown through spring and summer, are now hard and clean: the stags are ready to compete.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neuroncdn.com\/cdn-0001\/12b3ed305fcb2d5eef61c5cbcb291918205e48eb62b6d87de94d09b0c157699d?ts=1790683433\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you don&#8217;t see: the toll on the stag<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the stag, the rut is an endurance race. Throughout the breeding season it spends almost all its time roaring, watching over the hinds, chasing rivals and fighting. It barely rests and eats very little.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is a huge energy expenditure that comes from its own fat and muscle reserves. Dominant stags, which fight the most and eat the least, can lose a very large share of their body weight during the rut. On top of this come fighting injuries and physical stress, which leads to oxidative stress: an imbalance that damages cells when effort is intense and prolonged.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why does this matter to the manager? Because a stag that starts the rut with low reserves finishes it badly weakened. It then enters winter, when pasture is scarce and the cold sets in, with a higher risk of illness. In addition, how well it recovers over that winter affects its next set of antlers, which are cast in March and grow again from scratch.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hinds matter too<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the stags take centre stage, it is the hind that sustains the population, and the breeding success of the season depends on her. Her body condition in autumn determines much of what happens next:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><p><strong>Coming into heat:<\/strong> hinds in good condition come into heat earlier and more regularly. A late heat means late calving.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p><strong>The calf:<\/strong> a late-born calf has less time to grow before its first winter, and this shows in its survival.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, this autumn&#8217;s rut is next spring&#8217;s calf crop.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Management and feeding on estates and hunting grounds during the rut<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In big game management, the important work is not done during the rut but before it. Once the stag is in rut it hardly eats, so whatever it has not stored during the summer it will not recover in time. These are some practical keys:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><p><strong>Plan ahead.<\/strong> Dry summers leave the pasture in dehesas and cork oak woodlands very poor. Use the end of summer to assess the condition of the animals and the pasture. If the estate needs it, supplementary feeding should begin before the rut and be designed within the hunting management plan and the estate&#8217;s forest management.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p><strong>Clean, accessible water.<\/strong> In September many ponds are at their lowest. Water is the first need and often the most neglected.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p><strong>Minerals and vitamins.<\/strong> Sodium, magnesium, zinc and vitamin E, a natural antioxidant, are part of the balance the animal needs when physical effort is high.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p><strong>Take care not to concentrate animals.<\/strong> Feeders and supplementation points bring many deer together in a small space, increase contact between them and alter their natural behaviour, which makes it easier for diseases such as tuberculosis to spread. It is advisable to spread the points out, move them regularly and keep them clean.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p><strong>Comply with the regulations.<\/strong> Supplementary feeding of game species is regulated by each Spanish autonomous community. From many viewpoints you can watch the rut without getting close to the animals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bring binoculars and wear discreet colours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The rut is prepared all year round<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we hear a roar in the middle of the woods, we are hearing the end of a story that began many months earlier. The strength of that stag, the condition of the hinds listening to him and the calves that will be born next spring all depend on how the population has come through the winter, the spring and, above all, the summer.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why, in game management, the rut is not just a spectacle to enjoy: it is the best indicator of the health of the estate. A healthy population is also the best guarantee for biodiversity, the balance of ecosystems and the conservation of the environment we want to leave to future generations.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neuroncdn.com\/cdn-0001\/609bd2fe03c3c38921adfdeac1145b928be7d85952d7bda364f486f727845bf9?ts=1790684634\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frequently asked questions about the red deer rut<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When does the red deer rut end?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Activity usually declines around mid-October, although the end is not abrupt. It depends on latitude, altitude and weather: in cold or mountainous areas it tends to start and finish earlier, and a warm, dry autumn can delay it. In addition, hinds that are not mated in their first heat come back into heat a few weeks later, so it is normal to hear occasional roars until the end of October or even November. Once most hinds are pregnant, the stags&#8217; testosterone drops, their necks return to normal size and they leave the rutting grounds to return to their feeding areas, where they form bachelor groups again.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do deer barely eat during the rut?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a hormonal and behavioural response. Rising testosterone reduces the stag&#8217;s appetite, and its time is also taken up by roaring, guarding the harem and confronting rivals. It is worth remembering that the deer is a ruminant: eating is not enough, it needs quiet time to ruminate so the rumen can do its work. During the rut that time almost disappears, so the animal lives off its fat and muscle reserves. When the rut ends, appetite returns gradually and the rumen has to readapt to autumn pastures and fruits such as acorns. That is why the body condition a stag has when it enters the rut is so decisive.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens to the stag&#8217;s antlers after the rut?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Antlers follow an annual cycle driven by hormones. After the rut they remain hard and lifeless, attached to the skull, throughout the winter. At the end of winter, when testosterone falls to its lowest level, they are cast, usually around March, and are completely renewed every year. A new set starts growing almost immediately, covered in a skin rich in blood vessels called velvet. Antler is one of the fastest-growing tissues in mammals and demands large amounts of minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus, as well as protein. At the end of summer, with the new rise in testosterone, the bone hardens, the velvet dries and the stag strips it off by rubbing against shrubs and trees. That is why winter and spring nutrition shows in the antlers of the following rut.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neuroncdn.com\/cdn-0001\/e07dcccce7f9132c8fd1b9a977fb664366ca2c87e5026fa5f59b9f32f417547d?ts=1790684339\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the difference between the red deer rut and the fallow deer rut?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The <em>berrea<\/em> is the rut of the red deer (<em>Cervus elaphus<\/em>), while the <em>ronca<\/em> is the rut of the fallow deer (<em>Dama dama<\/em>), a smaller species, often with a spotted coat and palmate, shovel-shaped antlers. The fallow deer rut comes somewhat later, between October and early November, and its call is not a long roar but a deep, short, repeated groan. The strategy also differs: fallow bucks usually defend small rutting stands, which they mark with scrapes and urine, and wait there for the does to come.
