Shorter days, cold nights, the first rains and changes in the grass force their bodies to adapt within a few weeks: the coat changes, what they eat changes, their metabolism gets ready for the cold and the risks they face in the field change too. That is why it is one of the times of year when it pays most to keep an eye on their general condition and support their immune system. Understanding these changes allows us to plan ahead and adjust the care of horses in autumn before problems appear.

Coat change in horses in autumn: how the winter coat develops

The coat change depends less on the cold than on daylight. As the hours of daylight decrease, the horse produces more melatonin (the hormone the brain releases in darkness) and less prolactin, and that signal is what triggers the growth of the winter coat. In fact, a study with horses and ponies found that artificially extending daylight hours from the autumn equinox onwards could no longer reverse the growth of the winter coat (O’Brien et al., 2020). In other words, by the end of September the horse’s body has already prepared for winter.

Growing a new, dense and protective coat requires energy and nutrients. A horse on an unbalanced diet will often show a dull coat, a slow or patchy shedding and thinner areas. Skin and hair are the horse’s first protective barrier against cold and damp. That is why, during the coat change, it is advisable to:

Check that the ration fully covers the needs for good-quality protein, minerals and vitamins.

Groom often to remove dead hair and keep an eye on the condition of the skin.

Discuss with your vet whether to clip horses that will keep working and sweat a lot, since a long, wet coat takes hours to dry.

Feeding horses in autumn: from pasture to hay, little by little

In autumn, feeding changes almost without us noticing. The grass grows back with the rain, but its quality is highly variable, and by the end of the season most horses come to rely more on hay and preserved forage.

Autumn pastures and laminitis

Laminitis is one of the most painful and disabling diseases in horses (Geor, 2009). It affects the laminae of the hoof, very fine folds that join the hoof wall to the bone inside the foot (the third phalanx, or pedal bone) and that carry the animal’s entire weight. When these laminae become inflamed and damaged, that bond weakens (Geor, 2010) and, in severe cases, the bone can rotate or sink inside the hoof. A horse with laminitis is reluctant to walk, shifts its weight onto its heels (often with the front feet stretched forward) and has hot hooves. If you see these signs, call your vet as soon as possible, because it is an emergency.

The grass that regrows in autumn can build up a lot of sugar. Grasses store energy in the form of fructans, a type of sugar that horses ferment rapidly in the large intestine. In pastures analysed between April and November, fructan concentrations of between 83 and 299 g per kilo of dry matter have been measured (Longland et al., 2012). Cold nights combined with sunny days encourage this build-up, because the plant produces sugars during the day but barely uses them for growth.

This matters because most cases of laminitis occur in horses at pasture, especially when the grass is rich in these rapidly fermentable carbohydrates. The animals most at risk are those with insulin resistance or obesity, known as equine metabolic syndrome (Geor, 2009, 2010). For these horses in autumn it is advisable to limit grazing time, avoid the early afternoon on sunny, cold days and monitor their body condition.

Gradual changes and colic

The horse’s digestive system copes poorly with sudden changes. Any change from pasture to hay, from one batch of hay to another or in the amount of concentrate feed should be made gradually, spread over several days. This is no minor detail: in a study of ileal impactions (the ileum is the last section of the small intestine), cases were significantly more frequent in autumn, and the authors linked this to the changes in weather and feeding management typical of that time of year (Hanson et al., 1998).

Water, salt and electrolytes

Once the summer heat is over, horses drink less without us noticing, just as their ration becomes drier with more hay. A horse that drinks too little is at greater risk of impaction colic. To encourage drinking:

Make sure clean water is always available, checking troughs and pipes before the first frosts.

Offer lukewarm water if the water is very cold.

Keep free access to salt, as sodium stimulates thirst and helps the horse drink what it needs. A free-access mineral block is a practical way to cover this need; further down, in the deworming section, we explain which one we use at AMBiotec.

Also watch for signs of dehydration: dry or sticky gums, a skin fold on the neck that is slow to flatten and scant, dark urine. If you notice them, contact your vet, who will assess whether the horse needs rehydration with electrolytes to restore its fluid balance.

Seasonal dangers in the field: acorns and maple seeds

Autumn brings two risks to the field that many owners are unaware of.

Acorns. They contain tannins and, eaten in large amounts, can cause serious problems. In a case series of nine suspected acorn poisonings, the horses showed bloody diarrhoea, colic and kidney damage. Although only a small proportion of exposed horses become ill, the authors consider it prudent to limit access to acorns in autumn (Smith et al., 2015).

Atypical myopathy. This is a serious and often fatal muscle disease caused by hypoglycin A, a toxin found in the seeds (the familiar “helicopters”) and seedlings of the sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus). In a study in the Netherlands, almost all samples of this species contained the toxin, whereas Norway maple (Acer platanoides) and field maple (Acer campestre) did not contain it in detectable amounts (Westermann et al., 2016). Horses grazing poor pastures in autumn are the most predisposed, and the toxin persists even in hay (Sponseller and Evans, 2024). If you see weakness, stiffness, muscle tremors or dark urine in a horse grazing near maples, call your vet.

Deworming horses in autumn: targeted, not by the calendar

Autumn is a classic time to review the deworming plan, but deworming “because it is due” is no longer the best strategy. For years all horses were treated at fixed intervals, and this has encouraged resistance of small strongyles (cyathostomins) to two of the three available families of anthelmintics (Lester and Matthews, 2014). Today a targeted approach is recommended to control internal parasites:

Carry out faecal egg counts so that only the horses that need it are treated.

Discuss with your vet specific tests for tapeworms or for encysted larval stages, which faecal egg counts do not detect well.

Combine treatment with management measures, such as removing droppings from the field and avoiding overstocking.

This is especially important because the mass emergence of cyathostomin larvae from the intestinal wall, which usually occurs in late winter and spring, can have a mortality rate of up to 50% (Matthews et al., 2023).

Alongside treatment and management, a healthy gut helps horses cope better with the parasite pressure of autumn. To support the parasite control plan set by the vet, at AMBiotec we use CocciBlock, a complementary mineral feed in block form formulated for ruminants, pigs and horses. Its phytobiotic core, based on plant extracts and essential oils, supports a balanced microbiota and gut health, especially at times of dietary change such as autumn. At the same time, as a mineral block, it provides sodium, magnesium, zinc and vitamin E. One block is placed per horse, always hung up so the horse can lick it easily, and never on the ground or in the feeder. It does not replace anthelmintics: it should be part of the herd health programme.

Rain, mud and damp: watch the legs and hooves

Autumn rain turns paddocks into muddy areas, and mud is one of the critical points of the season for horses’ legs.

Mud fever or pastern dermatitis

Mud fever (also known as pastern dermatitis or greasy heel) is an inflammation of the skin of the pastern, the area just above the hoof. It shows as redness, discharge and scabs, and can cause pain and lameness. A recent veterinary review explains that it is a multifactorial problem: it appears more often on the hind legs, on white (unpigmented) legs and in heavy breeds with abundant feathering, while the role of rain and damp on their own is still unclear (Gerber et al., 2023). In practice, these steps do help:

Check pasterns and heels daily, especially in horses with white legs or lots of feathering. Keep a regular schedule with the farrier.

Avoid leaving the horse all day in waterlogged areas.

If the legs need washing, dry them thoroughly afterwards. Drying is as important as cleaning.

Do not pull the scabs off by force, and consult your vet if the lesion spreads, oozes or the horse is lame, because there may be an infection that needs treatment.

Conclusion: observing your horse is the best care

Autumn does not have to be a difficult time for horses. The key is to adapt management to each change: support the coat change with good nutrition, change the diet little by little, watch out for acorns and maples, plan deworming with your vet and protect the legs from mud. Above all, observe your horse every day: its appetite, the way it drinks, its coat and the way it moves are the first signs that something needs attention.

Frequently asked questions about horses in autumn

How does autumn affect older horses?

Older horses need special attention when the cold arrives. They find it harder to maintain weight, many have dental problems that make chewing hay difficult, and their joints feel the damp more. Before winter it is advisable to:

Schedule a dental check to make sure they make good use of their forage.

Monitor body condition every few weeks and adjust the ration in good time.

Review the vaccination plan with your vet.

In addition, autumn is a time when the horse’s pituitary gland is naturally more active. Levels of ACTH, the hormone used to diagnose pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID, popularly known as equine Cushing’s disease), are higher between August and October in both healthy horses and horses with the disease (Copas and Durham, 2012). So if your older horse sheds late or unevenly, loses muscle or has a history of laminitis, autumn is a good time to talk to your vet, who will interpret the test results using the seasonal reference ranges.

To rug or not to rug?

Horses are well prepared for the cold: their winter coat, body fat and the heat they generate by fermenting forage protect them better than we imagine. What they cope with worst is the combination of cold, rain and wind, because a wet coat loses its insulating capacity. In general, a rug is useful for clipped horses, older or thin horses and animals without shelter from the rain. On a healthy horse with its winter coat, an unnecessary rug can make it sweat and leave it damp under the fabric. If you use one, check it daily and adjust it to each day’s weather conditions.

How should you ride in autumn?

With lower temperatures, the warm-up should be longer to prepare muscles and joints and reduce the risk of injury. When you finish, let the horse dry off before returning it to the stable or the field. If it sweats a lot under a long coat, cool it down at a walk and use a cooler rug. With shorter days, riders also need to take care to be visible if they go out on roads at dusk.

Horses in autumn: how to support the coat change,
